Events at the Ethical Society of Austin

April 26, 2025 1:00-3:00 pm Central

As Walter Cronkite once argued; “Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.” Yet in our country today, the free flow of information is increasingly under threat. On the front line of this struggle are librarians diligently working to share our culture. Librarians have been threatened with jail, violence and the loss of their job for simply sharing our nation’s collective wisdom.

Join us for an intergenerational day of service as we create support packages for libraries and librarians who are facing opposition from those who seek to limit the exchange of ideas. We create personal notes of support, decorate cards and bookmarks, and let others know that they are not alone.

This is an in-person event at 5604 Manor Rd (Workers Defense Project).

For those who cherish democracy, justice, equality, and inclusion, the next four years will be a challenging journey. Yet, while despair and grief may be overwhelming right now, we must remember that they can also disempower. Tragedy has woven its thread through the fabric of human history, and time after time, we have been called to respond—to summon the will and courage to move forward. Together, we will reflect on how we face tragedy and inequity, choosing the ethical paths that lead to hope and renewal, and turning away from those paths that deepen our despair.

Curt Collier is the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County, where he facilitates workshops and capacity-building training for over 45 organizations each year. For the past 19 years, he has supported community stakeholders in developing resilient and sustainable nonprofit organizations. He also leads a monthly grant writing workshop and has established career pipelines for diverse young adults across 20 cities and 25 national parks. Collier serves as an ongoing consultant to the National Park Service and other federal agencies, and he is the founder of the Ethical Society of Austin. Additionally, he is adjunct faculty at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

  • The purpose of Colloquy is to help participants, in a communal setting, “delve more deeply into the depths of their own being and to develop the habit of self-reflection, to live in a closer conformity to their stated beliefs and to find a source of inspiration.”

During a Colloquy, participants reflect on a theme introduced by a facilitator. Sharing about the session’s theme often promotes deeper insight.

After the program, there will be a pot luck luncheon.

  • Ayania Hicks, a policy expert at American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU Texas) , will explain how the First Amendment protects the right to protest, which state laws impact speech rights in public spaces, and what to do if approached by law enforcement.
