Events at the Ethical Society of Austin
June 15, 2025 10:30 am-12:00 pm Central
SB 10 is now the law in Texas, and all classrooms are now required to display a copy of the Ten Commandments. While the courts are likely to have some say in whether the law may actually go into effect, we might pause our dismay and consider what Felix Adler, a founder of Ethical Culture, had to say about the Hebrew Decalogue and its place in Western thought. We may also want to consider the challenge that is created for the notion of separation of church and state when the schools are given the task of teaching ethical values to students.
Carolyn A. Parker, PhD, is a member of the Ethical Society of Austin and Senior Research Fellow at the Ethical Culture Institute at NYSEC. She is currently editing a collection of Felix Adler’s lectures, including “The Ten Commandments.”
