In 2012 President Obama issued an executive memorandum that created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. President Trump rescinded DACA in 2017 and over the past two years it has been litigated in the courts. Given that Texas has the second-highest number of DACA recipients, the implications of this policy are particularly relevant here as well as in the broader national landscape. The future of the DACA program will soon be determined as the Supreme Court recently announced it would review the federal court cases challenging its termination. This policy briefing will provide an in-depth review and discussion of the state of DACA from a legal perspective. The panel will then zoom out and consider the role that advocates and DACA recipients themselves have played in maintaining the policy.
